IT'S ALL ABOUT FIR

Our Garrett County, Maryland farm, at over 2,800 feet in elevation, lends itself particularly well to growing quality fir. Fraser and Canaan Valley Fir, in particular, prefer the cooler soil temperatures and extra moisture that is found at this higher elevation.

Fraser fir, the Nation's most popular Christmas tree, is native to the higher elevations of North Carolina and Virginia.
Canaan Valley Fir is a relatively recent Christmas tree discovery. It is a wonderful tree similar in many respects to Fraser Fir, and is native to the Canaan Valley Area of West Virginia, which is less than 100 miles from our farm.
We are now discovering our ability to grow high quality Canaan Valley Fir at our Pennsylvania farm too. This is really a big change for our Cumberland area customers who can now have the same tree without the travel to Garrett County.
Both of these superb trees are remenant populations to the great Balsam Fir Forests which populated the Eastern Mountain Ranges continuously from Canada to the Southern United States after the last Ice Age, before climatic changes occurred. It's entirely possible that without Christmas tree growers continuing the propagation (and improvement), these two species would have been lost forever.
Concolor Fir, which is also known as White Fir, is another species native to the higher elevations of the American Southwest. This wonderful tree has some very special qualities. Although some are green, most are a blue-green similar in color to Blue Spruce. Unlike spruce, however, Concolor Fir has soft needles and a spectacular citrus aroma of fresh oranges.
Douglas Fir is native to the Western United States at higher elevations from Canada to Mexico. Because of its needle retention, we grow the sub-species found in the higher elevations of New Mexico. Douglas Fir is a really nice Christmas tree that grows well at both of our locations
